I Have Been Getting Terrible Leg And Feet Cramps When I Am Sleeping. What Are Doing To Help With That?

A myPBCteam Member asked a question 💭

I take magnesium supplements, drink plenty of water and exercise every day. Try not to sit too much. The pain wakes me up and I even have dreams that I have leg cramps. Any advise to remedy this?

I drink tonic water before going to bed and it had helped me a lot.

For managing leg and feet cramps, especially when sleeping, here are some tips based on my knowledge base:

1. Stay Hydrated: Continue drinking plenty of water throughout the day to help prevent cramps.
2. Massage: Massaging your legs and feet can help move excess fluid and relieve pain. Make sure to stroke the fluid toward your torso.
3. Dietary Adjustments: Limit your sodium intake, as salt can cause fluid retention, which might contribute to cramps.
4. Compression Garments: Wearing compression stockings can prevent fluid buildup and reduce the likelihood of cramps.
5. Epsom Salt Baths: Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts for about 15 minutes can relax muscles and reduce inflammation. Avoid making the water too hot to prevent dry skin and itching.

If these tips don't alleviate your symptoms, consider consulting with your healthcare provider for further advice.

Hi Kim, I do drink a lot of water. I buy alkaline water which has helped with the itching along with the URSO. I'll have to try adding the electrolytes. The tonic water does help.

I also had terrible cramps. The first thing I tried was increase water intake.

I found that the water would flood from my eye minutes after drinking. During this time I researched more about PBC and found an article that suggested liver disease depletes electrolytes and causes dehydration, even if you drink water. I added electrolytes to my water and that has helped. (I also have consistently lower blood pressure, which is new since being diagnosed.)

Something to consider.
