Weight Gain

Recent diagnosis of PBC and awaiting for meds..I see alot talk of Urso...and weight gain..
I've suffered with an eating disorder and bulimia most of my life and the thought of gaining weight scares me...I know this sounds really shallow and the meds are there to help, but I can't help worrying about this. I exercise daily and try to eat healthily.. But do most gain weight on these meds?

No weight gain. I have lost 50 lbs changing my eating habits to clean and organic.
I too was bulimic when I was 29 years old. Karen Carpenter the singer died at the age of 31 of a heart attack. Her death woke me up and I stopped. PBC is a diet changer. Low salt, low sugar, low fat. Organic and healthy. You must eat well to live. I am 70 and feel fine and look pretty good dropping 50 lbs. I also work out.
Be strong , feed your body and treat it well. Take the medication and don’t skip
doses. Take PBC seriously and don’t starve your body. That is not good for your organs. Working out is great for your bones. There are many PBC nutritionists on u tube who offer good nutrition advice. Best wishes on your journey.

Not everyone gains weight from Urso. It did not affect me when I started taking this medication.

It's understandable to have concerns about weight gain, especially with a history of an eating disorder. Here are some key points from my knowledge base regarding PBC and weight:

- Weight Loss and PBC: PBC can lead to weight loss due to malnutrition, as damaged bile ducts block bile flow, affecting nutrient absorption. Advanced liver disease can also cause nausea and loss of appetite.
- Medications: Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and obeticholic acid (Ocaliva) are common treatments for PBC. These medications help keep bile flowing and reduce bile salts in the body, slowing disease progression.
- Weight Management: While weight gain isn't specifically highlighted as a common side effect of these medications, it's crucial to discuss your concerns with your doctor. They can provide personalized advice and may refer you to a dietitian to help manage your weight and nutritional needs.

Your healthcare team can help you balance your treatment with your concerns about weight.

Ohh Deborah, that's so reassuring, thank you for replying! I feel its not as bad as it once was, but every now and then it happens, it's so hard to control. Sorry to hear you've also had this issue. But good to know you dealt with it 🙂 Thank you for your advice. I will start looking on you tube as well x
